Numeracy and Literacy in Nature: Outdoor Activities For Grades K-3!

Although in-school classes are cancelled in Alberta, student learning continues with a focus on language and mathematics for K-6 students. Why not help your kids boost their interest and skills in math and language arts by having fun outside?

Today, we bring you four fun and simple outdoor activities that support numeracy and literacy learning outcomes for children in grades K-3.

Fun with Letters

●Draw letters in snow, mud or sand
●Find nature objects that start with that letter
●Create that letter with objects or sticks
A Day In The Life

Take your child outside and have them select a tree to sit near. Provide five minutes to observe the tree and look at the plants and animals that may be observed in, on, or around the tree. 

Prompt your child to imagine they are an animal or a plant living in or under the
tree. Ask them to tell you a story about a day in their life.
'Show Me’ Games

Ask your child to collect 10 objects (or whatever number you’d prefer). Then play ‘show me’.
● Show me three objects - put them to one side. How many objects remain?
● Show me six objects - put them to one side. Add one more. Now how many? Now take two away. Now how many?
Chalk Number Line

You will need a sidewalk or road, sidewalk chalk, and some pinecones to use as place markers.

Using the chalk, draw a line and ask your child to draw numbers from 0-50 going up by intervals of 5 with one large step in between numbers. 

Write out some simple addition and subtraction equations on a piece of paper and call them out. Ask your child to place a pinecone on the answer.
