Calgary EcoSchools - June EcoNotes

June is a month for celebration! Let's look back at everything we managed to accomplish during a very difficult year, and look forward to what we might accomplish next year. We’re offering information sessions throughout the month to help you start planning for the fall. Don't miss the Summer Institute for Climate Change, a great opportunity for teachers and educators of all kinds.

June is also National Indigenous Histories Month, with National Indigenous Peoples Day falling on the 21st. It's also a great month to learn about water systems and conservation, as June 8 is World Oceans Day, June 17 is World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, and June 22 is World Rainforest Day.

To help you start planning for next year, we’re offering two different information sessions throughout the month of June; Introduction to Calgary EcoSchools and Optimising Your EcoSchools Experience.

What's New?

Congratulations to our Certified EcoSchools!

The Calgary schools that achieved EcoSchools certification were announced at the opening address of the Mayor's Environmental Expo. Please join us in congratulating the recognized schools!

Certified Platinum:

Robert Thirst School Crescent Heights School Collingwood School

Certified Gold:

Ron Southern School St. Damien School

Certified Bronze:

Highwood School

Additionally, Dr. J.K. Mulloy School and Glamorgan School were recognized as EcoSchools Participants.

Together, our Calgary EcoSchools completed 95 environmental actions, diverted 1.9k kilograms of waste, planted 582 trees, and provided 3200 hours of outdoor learning.

These incredible accomplishments demonstrate the power of collective action as we work in partnership with the City of Calgary to help create a sustainable city and a sustainable future for all. Next year, we look forward to growing this positive impact even further as more schools join the Calgary EcoSchools network. Together we can do amazing things!

EcoSchools is Coming to Edmonton

Thanks to a generous grant from the Edmonton Community Foundation, the EcoSchools Canada program is expanding to the Greater Edmonton Area. Know any Edmonton teachers? Have them check out our website or information sessions.

Share your Successes

95 EcoSchools actions were completed this year, and we want to hear about them! Celebrate your achievements, share your experiences, and show other teachers what they can accomplish. We'll be in touch soon - in the meantime, gather your stories, pictures and videos.

Summer Institute for Climate Change Education

The June 18 registration deadline for the Summer Institute for Climate Change Education is fast approaching! Register now to join ACEE and Climate Generation on July 28-30 for three exciting days of virtual learning.

40+ educators, scientists, youth, and climate activists from across North America will present on the best practices in climate education and the intersectionality between climate change and social justice. As part of the Alberta Cohort, you will have opportunities to mingle with fellow Albertans and focus on regional issues and resources. Walk away refreshed for the new school year and well prepared to engage your students and communities in climate action.

Every week until the June 18 deadline, ACEE will be giving away one of our favorite climate change education guidebooks to a registrant. If you don't win, your name will be entered into the next draw- so don't wait until the last minute to sign up!

CCTCA 2021: Environmental Education Symposium Recordings Available

Recordings of all 12 workshops from the CCTCA 2021 symposium are available on our website. The workshops, split between primary and secondary sessions, covered environmental and outdoor education, Indigenous perspectives on sustainability, and the EcoSchools program.
