Get started with this year's EcoSchools program by visiting one of our Fall Into EcoSchools Drop-In sessions. Come for as little or as long as you can and get your EcoSchools questions answered. Drop-In sessions are being offered throughout October, starting at 3 pm today!

Make sure to join us for the virtual Fall Share Fair on October 28 from 4:00-5:30 to share, discover and connect with environmental education programs available to support your EcoActions. 

EcoSchools Canada is an environmental certification framework free to all publicly funded schools across Alberta. Schools can choose from over 45 environmental and climate actions and get recognized for their hard work.

EcoSchools Canada's online platform allows you to choose from over 45 actions, each with their own activity guide, to create a plan tailored to your school's needs. See the full list of EcoSchools actions here.

This summer EcoSchools Canada updated the action library, including adding these new actions:

• Get Cooking: Did you know that reducing food waste and eating a plant-rich diet are two of the top 10 actions on climate? Engage families in local food systems with this new action. 
• Water Audit: Explore how your school uses water and implement water-saving strategies to care for this precious resource! Extend the learning and explore how water relates to social equity.
• Sit Spot: Find your favourite outdoor place to observe and appreciate nature. Deepen your relationship with nature and reflect upon your role in reconciliation through this simple, yet profound, place-based learning activity.
• Nearby Nature: "Nature” is often understood as a place far away from human involvement, but humans exist within natural systems, even in urban environments! Grow deeper connections to local nature and develop field guides, maps, or signage to help others connect, too! Take this opportunity to engage with local Indigenous communities and ways of knowing through land-based education.

The Alberta Youth Leaders for Environmental Education (AYLEE) program offers fantastic opportunities for individual students as well as classrooms in grades 7-12 looking to expand their network, engage in more learning opportunities, and take action! Sign up for AYLEE to participate in activities like our next virtual meeting, 5:30 pm on October 20, where guest speakers Amy Spark and Jodi Lammiman will share strategies for mental wellness during climate change!

Wheatland Elementary achieved Platinum Certification on their very first year as an EcoSchool! It turns out they were already doing tons of eco-actions.

We asked teacher Carley Blaseg to tell us about it:

...Not only was the environmental team involved, but our entire school participated in many ways; they made pledges to conserve energy and water, took part in The Great Gulp, participated in Wasteless Wednesdays and all of our other Earth saving themed days, planted indoor and outdoor gardens, and more!
