Grade 6

The Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation offers programs that can be adjusted to all Grades.

Topics include: Adaptation, Bat Basics, Birds of Prey, Supremely Skunks, Wetlands Wildlife, Who's in Your Background?, Wildlife Rescue, World of Owls, and Virtual Tours of the hospital and rehabilitation center.

Winter Programs - Snowshoeing, Avalanche Awareness, Cross-Country Skiing, In-City Cross-Country Skiing, and Overnight Camping.

Spring & Fall Programs - Wildland overnight, Backpacking, and Hiking. 

Programs are offered at your location or the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, Ralph Klein Park, Reader Rock Garden or a location of your choice. Topics focus on many areas, including wildlife, insects, wetlands, rocks, gardens, biological diversity, water, seasons, forests, & air.

Teachers can also rent a free nature kit for 1 week, that they can use for outdoor learning/walking field trips with their class. 

Five Minute Field Trips Volumes I and II are activity guides that are full of simple and fun outdoor games and activities that you can do right out your back door. 

Scientists in Schools is avaliable for schools throughout Alberta, including: Grande Prairie, Edmonton, Red Deer, Calgary, Lethbridge, & Medicine Hat. Presentations are linked to curriculum & based on teacher requests.

Explore this example of an Action Project that your class/school can take, by Dr. E.W. Coffin School in the Brentwood Community of Calgary. Students of the school created signs with their own artwork and wording in order to communicate the importance of the special nature area around their school to others. With support from the Calgary Foundation Neighbour Grants, the school is looking to address the 26 existing signs that provide information on native plants, animals, and inform residents of the biodiversity in the area through an Indigenous lens. The second phase of the project involves the creation of a permanent Land Acknowledgement sign.
