Land Use Framework

Christine Crane, Westmount School, Grade 9, Foothills School Division

Okotoks is one of the fastest growing communities in Alberta and land allocation affects our quality of life in many areas. Students studies this issue using a cross-curricular lens and, to develop their own land use plan for our area. The students worked in stakeholder groups that modelled the South Saskatchewan Regional Steering Committee and determine the ratio of land needed to balance the environmental and socio-economic necessities and had to work with the various stakeholder groups. They gatherer information from a variety of sources and in a variety of ways (peer conferences, field trips). The students presented their final plan to an expert in land use management.
